May 14th, 2021: DIFFERENT FIELDS INSPIRING MY PRACTICE by Geneviève Johnson

My practice is about:
Fragmenting
Layering
Dancing in between
Becoming multiplicity in one
Creating a doubt, a faultline, an opening to dive in.

What inspires me is the interweaving possibilities between different fragments:
sometimes similar to each other, most times very different from one another…
This fragmenting approach illuminates the space in-between.

I enter the spaces to investigate the mystery of the body and the world around…

These fragments and “in-betweens” come from dance and theatre
but are also inspired by other fields of practice as different as

astrophysics,
biology,
somatic therapies,
poetry,
needle craft,
painting,
installation art,
and many others…

Fragments and The In-Between

Atoms: vibrating presences of different worlds and elements within us.
The first layer of my fragments.
All connected through a rhizomatic relationship.

Every day I am travelling their fractals:
irregular fragments in constant oscillation between construction and deconstruction

Astrophysics bring me a concrete experience of past, present and future in myself.

Two books I refer to often: an astrophysics book by Hubert Reeves and a book on somatic approaches to evolution of movement in living beings by Caryn McHose and Kevin Frank

Through biology and its unveiling of cells, organs, fluids, energy –
a plural cohabitation to form a single being –
I reminisce the evolution and development of life.

From floating unicellular being in water to walking and breathing on earth, I sense the ever changing of life.

Learning the somatic evolution of movement patterns in all the living,
makes me connect to a collective experience of life in motion …

Through this embodied universal memory from starburst to life evolution,
I build my cabinet of curiosity:

Infinite Reconstructions

Concrete and short poetry instill the structure to my poems in motion.
Imprinted with

  • sensations,
  • impressions,
  • changing images from colliding words,
  • unexplainable silences and voids…

readers have to mend the pieces together to create their own meaning.

Principles of fragmentation and reversibility allow for different images to surface then disappear into new unexpected ones…

Needle craft allows the meditative slow movement of creation.

The interweaving of different fibers loops back to the integration of multiplicity towards our unicity:
becoming multiple in order to form one.

Needle craft links me to the handwork made mostly by women for generations,
connecting me with a collective community and family movement memory.

It encompasses principles of
construction,
deconstruction,
reconstruction,
connection,
in-between…

as well as plurality through the presence of different fragments.

Layering: Imagined Reality From Gathered Fragments

Layering images like layers of possible
ways of being,
ways of becoming,
is fully part of my process.

Paintings and photographs create layers:
each layer imprinting its state on the others
creating new images, elusive presences, bodily transformations…

Left: Le thérapeute by René Magritte  – Right: Lout Shelter by Francis Bacon

In art installations, the layering is brought forth
through affects:

  • sensations,
  • impressions,
  • emotions…

Their weaving of
textures, sounds, smells, colours and shapes
build layers of physically felt images.

Living Puzzle

Interweaving of fragments:
atoms or cells,
words or threads,
energetic images or colours or objects…

their encounters, connecting and parting; their layering, appearing and disappearing;
their presence oscillating between full and empty, here and there, imagined and real…

A blinking representation of existence.
